| Suddenly I wake up at 3.45 am. and did heard a noise, a impact in the boat helmet. I get up and hurry up upstairs. There a man with a glass of vodka in the right hand told me: "Dont worry, we are catch on the ice..." |

| The Ferry boat Baltic Kristina depart from Stckholm harbour at 5.00 pm. The scandinavia winter is one of most beautiful that I saw in my life. Canada winter as well is amazing but if you wish find human and culture experience maybe need chance the travel and get a ticket to the nordics highlights. It was january 6th, and I was on assigment for a newspaper. It was my second travel to Riga from Sweden. At 4.20 [aprox] I wake up suddenly for a blow in the helmet of the ship. I get up from the bed in the cabin and went to the first deck, to see by the window what happened. There a man was with a glass of vodka in the hand and told me:" Dont worry man, we are catched by the ice..." |
| The first lights of the morning show me the awesome sea of ice. Never in my life had been in a beautiful place. I know many places around the world in my travels, in Africa, for example, but the white color of the, and the silent. Ice, ice and more ice, around the boat. By left and right other ships, was in the same situation. I talked with a first officer to interview tto the captain. I went to the bridge and stay there more that one hour talking with the captain. He had been living in Spain, working with a company of cargo. He explain me that it is very normal in the Baltic sea. |
| During two hours Serguey [the captain] and his bridge crew, fougth with the ice to open a way out. The other boats remained trapped in the ice, expecting for the icebreaker. It could be one day or more. The life on board was quiet and relaxed. Outside only the noise of the ice broken by the bow of the ship. By the popa of the ship the ice joined again to be solidified to the few minutes. The boat delayed four hours and we arrived to Riga harbour later. The sun was down but the light was incredible beautiful. |
| The helmet and the bow of Baltic Kristina was damage and cover by ice. All the crew on board help to the guests and wish them to go back again |
| The ferry from Stockolm to Riga travel by night and cross the Baltic sea. In winter the ice is half meter or more and the boats can not move. The icebreakers have a busy work during all winter. |
