| One of the most important works in Cuba is the cana de azucar and rum destilery. Millions of tons are cut every season for the workers or cortadores de cana. The suggar is exported some countries but the embargo against Cuba for USA forbidden to sell it wherever they want. |
| The Zafra train collect everyday the thousnds of kilos of cana de azucar and bring it to the factory where it will be destilled to get the famous rum Havana. |

assignment in Cuba was in 1990 to 1991. I decided go there to cover the
dairy life of cubans. Galicians and cubans have a narrow friendship
along the times and the history. When I arrived there the cuba
government dont understand why i choose the island to make a long term
documentary project. I did explain one and other time the important of
photography to make a photostory of the embargo and the social life. I
was working in the street, in the mine of Matahambre, in the Zafra
colllecting suggar, in the cigarros factory of H. Huppman, in the small
viallages, in the fields of potatoes... One year later I sent the pictures collection to Fotopress in Barcelona. I had news that I got the first prize when I ewas in Sydney covering a story of my book Galegos na Diaspora. The news of win the prize told me another photojournalist. |
