Why are there increasingly larger and more destructive fires on the Iberian Peninsula?
BAIONA, PONTEVEDRA, 10 AUGUST, 2006. In 2006, a new type of fire began in Galicia: the first megafires, far more destructive. The 30-30-30 rule was widely known. Humidity, temperature, and wind created an ideal mix for forests to burn. In the image, residents shout, protesting the fire in an adrenaline rush fueled by the helplessness with which it arrived and departed, destroying homes, forests, ecosystems, biodiversity, and the environment.
In 2006, fires in the Iberian Peninsula began to be referred to as megafires.

VALADARES, VIGO, 15 OCTOBER, 2017. Residents of the Valladares parish form a line to pass buckets of water to each other and try to stop the flames of a fire that threatens a nearby school. In 2017, the province of Pontevedra was ablaze; it was an apocalypse. The flying ash (muxicas in Galician) traveled hundreds of meters or kilometers due to the density of the hot air, igniting fires wherever it landed. It was a summer of extreme heat, the likes of which hadn't been seen for years. People, animals, and entire villages perished, and only the participation, empathy, and unity of the people managed to stop the fires. The investigations found no one responsible for that tragedy, perhaps a few unfortunate arsonists, but nothing more. The airlines profited handsomely. Since then, summer fires have come to be seen as a real enemy, with a lack of firefighters, equipment, and a forestry and emergency policy with great needs.
